Fuel Economy Based on Gasoline Grade
We go through the most confusing state of mind when we try and search out means to keep our car fit and at the same time we think of saving fuel. Let us go through a few insights in this article which will make us aware about which grade of gasoline your car needs and at the same time the fuel economy difference that gets created by choosing the right grade of gasoline. Gasoline being the blood line of our car should not create any high pressures and at the same time deliver smooth functioning. Your car’s mileage depends upon the grade of gasoline used.
Let us understand more about the blood line of our car, gasoline. This commonly used fuel is a mixture of hydrocarbons. It is used in spark ignition engines. There are basic three grades of gasoline available in retail outlets.
1.
Regular
2.
Mid grade
3.
Premium
Regular gasoline: The octane rating is greater than or equal to 85 but less than 88
Mid grade gasoline: The octane rating is grater than or equal to 88 but less than or equal to 90
Premium gasoline: The octane rating is greater than 90
The gasoline is differentiated on the basis of the engine pinging produced, commonly known as engine knocking. Octane is a hydrocarbon in a liquid for which is used to measure the knocking rate in an engine. Different additives are added to make the gasoline burn better. If the percentage of octane is more in the fuel it does not allow it burn properly hence leading into further knocking issues in the engine. Fuel with a lesser percentage of octane burns faster than fuel with a higher percentage of octane. The best way to look at this is from the eyes of a mechanic and you will be able to make your choice about the grade by just reading the above mentioned facts.
So let us not scratch our grey cells more, and make our dilemma simpler in choosing the right grade to save fuel and keep our engine healthy. Make the right choice according to the need for example if you use premium gasoline with higher octane rating for travelling in altitudes or to climb a slope you will end up wasting more fuel and as the gasoline would not burn fast it will also give rise to immediate engine knocking. You can use premium gasoline with cars that have a powerful engine. If the engine is not powerful and if it takes time for the fuel to burn because of its high percentage of octane it leaves behind carbon deposits. These deposits results into further clogging in the engines.
In simple words: Use premium gasoline only for vehicles with powerful engines. Premium gasoline may not be used in old cars or while travelling altitudes, not even with engines having less power. Your engine specifications will help you understand it better.
Finally, your vehicle deserves a healthy life not a knocking life!!!
